JUSTINE SKYE: Takes Knee While Singing National Anthem

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • You're never to young to use your voice and platform to make a difference.
  • Sometimes it's more important to stand up for what you believe in now and worry about potential repercussions later.
  • She might not be invited back to the Barclays soon, but she probably just raised her overall profile with this move.
  • Skye recently performed at the Barclays Center for the Tidal X benefit show.
  • This would have been a bigger deal at a football game, where the kneeling issue first become polarizing.

Justine Skye sang the national anthem at the Brooklyn Nets’ home opener at Barclays Center on Friday night -- and used the spotlight to make a statement. Towards the end of the “Star Spangled Banner,” the 22-year-old singer kneeled, showing support for athletes who've been doing the same to shed light on brutality and racial injustice in America.

The Brooklyn native wrote on Instagram afterward, "Got a bit shaky at the end... Was pretty uneasy about singing the anthem and probably won’t ever be invited to sing it again, but I had to take a knee for the opening game in my city and let my voice be heard... We will not be silenced #blacklivesmatter.”

Players on the Brooklyn Nets reportedly locked arms as the Roc Nation songstress sung the anthem. A Nets spokesperson says, “We recognize that tonight’s national anthem singer kneeled briefly at the end of her performance and we were not aware that she was going to do so."
